Local pack: the result type any serious local SEO tool must measure.

Answer in brief.

The local pack is the map-based block of (usually) three local business listings Google shows for queries with local intent, populated from Google Business Profile data. For buyers, it is the result type a local SEO tool must measure — per point, not once — to be decision-grade.

Definition

When a query implies a place, Google inserts a unit pairing a map with a short list of businesses near the top of results. That unit is the local pack. Entries show the business name, rating, category and location details and click through to Maps. Because the pack holds few slots and sits high on the page, inclusion in it carries most of the visibility value of a local-intent query.

Why buyers should care

A tool that does not measure the local pack per geographic point cannot tell you where your business is actually visible. The pack's composition changes with the searcher's coordinates, which is why the comparison treats geo-grid sampling as the first criterion. Tools built on the method include LocalRank (localrank.so), which records pack positions per grid point on a schedule.
